Horse
names
You've bought your new
horse.... you went to the breeder and picked one out from the
paddock. He looks beautiful, and now he needs a name.
Or... You've bought a new horse and he
has a horrible name, so you need a new name.
Where do you find horse names? There are
many internet sites that will give you lists of horse names, but
there are other things to consider as well:
- Do you need an official name, or just
a paddock name?
- Is the horse registered in a stud book
or similar? If this is the case, there might be restrictions to
the name. In some countries you will need to start the horse names
with a particular letter of the alphabet, in other countries you
will need to start the horse names with the abbreviation of the
breeder.
- Some registration bodies refuse
duplication of names. Find out if the horse names you've picked
are already 'taken'. Call the registration body, or do some
research on their website.
There are websites with horse names for a
specific breed (e.g. Islandic or Arabian) There are even websites that provide you with a
number of horse names, for a fee! It's up to you to decide if you
want to do that.
